WILMINGTON, Delaware (November 12, 2024) – Richards, Layton & Finger is proud to announce that firm director Paul M. Altman was selected as the 2024 recipient of the Martin I. Lubaroff Award by the American Bar Association Business Law Section’s LLCs, Partnerships and Unincorporated Entities Committee.  This prestigious award, considered to be one of the highest honors that a business entity attorney can receive, was presented to Paul at the 2024 LLC Institute on Thursday, November 7 in Tampa, Florida.

“Paul Altman, working together with Marty Lubaroff, played a significant role in the development of the law relating to Delaware limited partnerships and LLCs,” said Greg Ladner, a director of Richards Layton and a member of the firm’s Limited Liability Company and Partnership Advisory Group. “It seems fitting (and meaningful to people like me who worked with both of them) to see Paul receive this recognition in Marty’s name for Paul’s leadership, scholarship, and outstanding service in business entity law.”

With a history of leadership in partnership and LLC matters, Paul is a past chair and current emeritus member of the Joint Editorial Board on Uniform Unincorporated Organization Acts of the American Bar Association and the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws.  He has also served on several state and national bar committees related to alternative entity law, including as past chair and current emeritus member of the Delaware State Bar Association committee responsible for drafting proposed amendments to the Delaware Revised Uniform Limited Partnership Act, the Delaware Revised Uniform Partnership Act, and the Delaware Limited Liability Company Act.  Paul is a founding fellow and an initial board member of the American College of LLC and Partnership Attorneys.

For many years Paul worked closely with Marty Lubaroff, also a Richards Layton director.  Marty was a talented, thorough, and insightful lawyer.  Together Paul and Marty authored Lubaroff & Altman on Delaware Limited Partnerships, the first complete guide containing everything a lawyer needs to know from the birth to the death of a Delaware limited partnership.  Paul continues to be involved in the annual updates of this seminal book.

The Martin I. Lubaroff Award recognizes a nationally regarded business attorney and member of the ABA Business Law Section’s LLCs, Partnerships and Unincorporated Entities Committee who has consistently demonstrated leadership, scholarship, and outstanding service in business entity law.  The award was established in 2001 in honor of the memory of Marty Lubaroff, a well-known and highly regarded Delaware attorney who made substantial contributions to the field of partnerships and unincorporated entities.  He was a distinguished lecturer and writer as well as a good friend and mentor to scores of lawyers in Delaware and throughout the United States.

“Richards Layton attorneys have a long history of building and maintaining the preeminence of Delaware’s laws and legal practice,” said Lisa Schmidt, president of the firm. “Paul Altman and Marty Lubaroff embody our firm’s tradition of leadership, innovation, and dedication, and I am thrilled to have this opportunity to congratulate Paul and honor Marty for the incredible role they have played at our firm and in the legal community.”

Paul is considered “one of the deans of the Delaware bar” (Chambers USA).  His practice involves alternative entities, including partnerships and limited liability companies, and focuses primarily on Delaware law matters related to the formation of private investment funds.  An esteemed member of the firm’s leadership team, Paul served as Richards Layton’s senior vice president after chairing the firm’s Business Department and heading the Limited Liability Company and Partnership Advisory Group for nearly 20 years.

Paul has been recognized in Chambers USA, The Legal 500, The Best Lawyers in America, The International Who’s Who of Private Funds Lawyers, Super Lawyers, and as a Delaware Today Top Lawyer in Private Equity Law.  He earned a J.D. from Villanova University School of Law, where he served on the Villanova Law Review, and a B.S. from Lehigh University.
